It was in the presence of Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo that the group recently officially presented its plans to build two datacentres in the municipalities of Bastogne and Vaux-sur-Sûre.
Jacques Godet, BNP Paribas Group’s information technology manager stressed the everyday importance of this type of tool: “Each transaction on a customer’s part triggers something in a datacentre. As a group, we wanted to renew our infrastructure. We have datacentres in several parts of the world but they are all to a certain extent obsolete and we wanted to have four of them available. Four gives us two times two, at a sufficient distance from each other. So we looked at all the options, it being the case that we wanted to have two in the Paris region. We then found these two regions in the Province of Luxembourg that met all our criteria.”
The proposed site in the Province of Luxembourg was the best match for the criteria laid down. In addition, BNP Paribas was able to count on particularly effective support from Idelux, the Province of Luxembourg’s inter-municipal economic development authority, to facilitate these developments on its own sites.
Eventual investment in the project will come to 200 million euros and is set to create between 70 and 80 direct and indirect jobs. Over 50,000 m2 will be assigned to data processing on the two sites in the Province of Luxembourg. These data processing centres will be commissioned in three successive phases spread over 15 years. The first computer and logistics buildings will be operational in the Spring of 2015. The whole project is due to be completed in 2025.
