This year again, the New York-based magazine Travel + Leisure has published its list of the 50 best places in the world to travel. For the first time, a Walloon city makes it onto the list, Liège.

Cities don’t need to be out of a picture postcard to be part of this ranking. Indeed, the magazine weighs up a place’s attractiveness on the basis of a range of criteria.

And if the city of Liège has managed to climb into this top 50, it is thanks to art and gastronomy. Several of Liège’s institutions that excel in these two fields are cited by Travel + Leisure. In terms of art, it highlights in particular the opening in May 2016 of the Boverie museum, in partnership with the Louvre, featuring painters such as Manet and Van Gogh, the Guillemins station and Médiacité, the famous shopping centre. The gastronomic delights that have earned it its place include Liège waffles from Pollux, place de la Cathédrale and Lequet’s famous Liège meatballs.

This international ranking is all good publicity for the city of Liège, in keeping with its constant development. Note that Ghent is also included in the ranking, in 25th position. First place went to Bocas del Toro, Panama.
